we’re glad to welcome back aun to cyclic law for their latest opus! aun’s music as always suggested forays into other dimensions, be it to imaginary worlds, industrial wastelands, through space and time, or via mind altered states. from the ominous dystopian artwork, of a city being drained of its energy by some mysterious black hole, to the first notes of the title track “fiat lux” we are once again transported on aun’s otherworldly travelling path. ever since the space industrial and power electronics of aun’s previous cyclic law cult release “black pyramid”, the world has become even more sinister, but in contrast, “fiat lux” exudes even more of aun’s melancholic hopefulness. the disintegrating chords and densely textured waves, anchored by a left field industrial pulse, invoke occult drug enhanced, future psychedelia. created in part in their montreal studio, these tracks were extensively performed live, prior to recording, and refined while on tour breaks in montpellier, barcelona and tokyo. the energy of these cities is definitely at work in these recordings, which also features a french connection of experimental heavy hitters: witxes, frédéric d. oberland and philippe petit have helped round out dumais and leblanc’ arsenal. fiat lux: let there be light, from light will come darkness.

long beach serial chiller ahwlee is a beat vet who delivers smooth buttery samples with a nostalgic vibe. 1991 is a cult classic cassette now issued for the first time on vinyl. these tracks are dusty, mellow and easy-going. don’t mistake mellow for boring, however, because ahwlee’s production is nuanced and intricate underneath the minimalist overtones. there’s jazzed-up rhodes all over the place, and the percussion work masterfully includes a ton of negative space in between perfectly chopped breaks. they’ll get your head nodding.

this highly anticipated release by los angeles based artist, axkan, delivers a powerful message to the techno underground, letting everyone know this record hasn t come to this point by mistake. with powerful remixes by luis flores, pinion and rolandohödar to support, axkan delivers a strong statement with tension , a techno masterpiece with broken industrial rhythms that is bound to shake floors, and crack the surface. he masterfully creates some true and raw emotion, with his dark, sinister and gritty sounds that is guaranteed to grab attention from the beginning. axkan s self-confident creativity, however didn t come alone. techno heavyweight luis flores provided a remix that is nothing short of spectacular. he encapsulates axkan s raw, dark noises, and completely manipulates them into a gnarled and twisted rendition. pinion s remix perfectly complements the release in a cohesive way to get the dance floor moving. his unique characteristics include a deadly vicious groove with glitchy vocals combined with deep melodies. aerotek founder, rolandohödar, had to get his hands in there, with his industrial techno breaks remix to add to this ferocious ride. with all tracks united together, this ep is rooted with serious energy and will undoubtedly tear speakers apart. it exploits experimental to traditional 4x4 percussion workouts and is definitely worth listening.

physical therapy assembles a flurry of kicks and thick breaks around deep subs and tender harmonies. lush moments are balanced with saturated rhythms, pushing the momentum in each tune. spoken words skip over dubbed out synths on more sugar, always a euphoric treat on the dance floor! on the b-side, pt flexes for the verdant tropical techno of string thing. play at 45 for the desensitized mix or slow things down to 33 for a balearic sensitized mix. both mixes available direct from the sounds of beaubien ouest bandcamp.

glyn -bigga- bush began his production career with rockers hi fi in the early 90s, co-writing several studio albums, a host of remixes and the infamous dj kicks - the black album. in 2000 he went solo as both biggabush and lightning head, making albums for sonar kollektiv and stereo deluxe as well as many more remixes. his sound reflects his love of dub reggae, analogue synthesisers and intricate rhythms, with influences of samba, afrobeat, the deep dubscapes of rhythm & sound and most recently the more interesting end of 140bpm bass music. this ep is his first vinyl release since the late 00s and takes in a number of bass-heavy rumblers with classic biggabush twists and turns, starting with the steppas delight of mangrove monkey, relentless subs and skanks of sounds & blues, post-dubstep breaks on dash way com and finishing with a minimal 4/4 fx soundscape on footsie index.

i released the original 12inch volume of five fingers of death battle breaks way back in 1998, while i was living in oakland and then san francisco during a time of incredible movement and creativity within the suddenly exploding scratch dj scene. the term turntablist, coined by dj disk, had yet to really catch on outside of the bay area scratch fraternity. having recently moved to california from new york, pauls turntable aesthetics were strictly 80s east coast and was more concerned with catching doubles (beat juggling) and overall party rocking. in other words, the science of scratching was not something i was even contemplating.needless to say, i was completely amazed and overwhelmed with what djs like qbert, shortcut, apollo and mixmaster mike were doing. limit and asymmetric are in fact both the work of st. petersburg-based producer evgeniy sergeev, who has been building up a library of contemporary d&b productions digitally and now makes the leap to vinyl with some of the strongest of his productions to date. stormy is aptly titled as it rips with ferocity through mangled breaks, rave stabs and hoovers aplenty and quarantine is a quintessential darkside jam with more of that tricksy drum programming. the b-side offers a little more respite with the sunkissed tones of transzendental and the soulful yet ruff mood of jazz is making a smart counterpoint to the heavier a side.

biomechanoid is the classic 1980 album by composer and flutist joel vandroogenbroeck. the cover art served as the basis for the design of the movie alien. its 1980, in munich, germany, upstart production music label coloursound library releases their debut album. capitalising on the success of ridley scott s alien film, the label dropped biomechanoid, featuring cover art commissioned by hr giger, whose horrific necronom iv lithograph served as the basis for the design of alien and the music of the relatively unknown joel vandroogenbroeck. comprised of bleak, cinematic synth soundscapes and percussion, the album served as an inaugural calling card for what would be a decade of dizzying solo releases by vandroogenbroeck for coloursound, running the gamut from mesopotamian ethno-folk to synth sequencer funk to electro drum breaks to in-utero ambient delights

using the style of analogue mpc production combined with the somewhat restrictive record sampling of strictly chinese music records, he has been able to be creative over three volumes, an amount of 100 instrumentals, despite the challenge of finding more obviously standout samples in chinese music.
the chinoiseries projects are the type of albums that invites the listener to play it from beginning to end, in order to really enjoy the trip and appreciate the variety of rhythms and textures spread over those 32 short instrumentals. in that way, “pt.3” is no different to its predecessors, but the originality of the samples, the curious harmonies and the odd-drum patterns still makes the album sounds as fresh as the first one.

bunkr enslave dust-coated synthesizers, dilapidated drum machines and rusty fx boxes to craft 4/4 tunes for their impatient overlords. their vision is clear they will make techno, they will make house, they will make electronica, and you will listen and dance. its not yet clear if bunkr is the work of one frenzied human or many lazy individuals but we do know one thing - the ringleader is one james dean, who previously released as lost idol on labels such as pork recordings, nature, final frontier and cookshop. following a prolonged spell of writing music at slow tempos, dean initiated bunkr as a reactionary desire to speed things up. too much time had been spent just sitting around - it was time to stop sitting and start dancing. true to their vision, here we have cloud chaser, a bubbling jam backed with a huge remix from shan, who flips the mix with dramatic strings, sprinkles of magic dust and massive amen breaks. no less impressive is junos revenge, a track youd turn up on your headphones while taking a nice afternoon stroll on the moon, on a sunny morning after a long interplanetary rave. igor tipura delivers the rework, complete with a marching percussion workout and acid chemtrails that will send you right back to 1993.

madcap and jaybee team up to create the musical masterpiece called “settle down”. the song starts out rather jazzy, with it’s smooth rhodes keys and heavy cymbal riding drum lines. when the song hits the breakdown, the whole tone of the tune changes. the punchy sub bassline is unleashed and becomes one of the driving forces of the track. echoing reggae style vocals are beautifully weaved into the background of the track, transforming the vibe into a reggae/dub style d&b classic. the amen drums also help to create an intoxicating energy that make this one a sure thing for dance floor mayhem. instant classic!
“hear comes” takes over where “settle down” left off. the song begins with big amen drums, backed with a reggae style skanking guitar chop. during the breakdown, a thoughtful roots reggae vocal sample is introduced that helps lift the track into a true dubwise gem. when the drop hits, the baseline kicks in and begins to wobble and throb behind all the deep atmospherics. the track has a beautiful breakdown, which takes the listener to a more melodic place. after a moment of serenity, the song breaks back into the chaotic old school flavor, which madcap does so well. this one’s a beauty!!

lok44 and dibek are /dl/ms/, dropping a malicious four-tracker as their joint trust debut. the haze hangs heavy as /dl/ms/ leave straight techno by the wayside, drilling deep underground into unexplored acid break deposits. rogue intent shakes tectonic plates, colliding grinding breaks with fierce analogue instrumentation, and the fumes oozing from their boreholes are likely to set your head spinning.

this june session victim return to delusions of grandeur imprint with their third studio album.listen to your heartis the result of a year of cross-continental scripting, started in their hamburg studio and wrapped up stateside in san francisco’s room g studios where the duo had worked on their 2014 lpsee you when you get there. here we present the first of three lp samplers containing four tracks each, cut nice and loud for the vinyl crew. bring it back gets things rolling with session victim’s trademark live drum breaks, looped up pads and hooky vocal samples. only good vibes here, with uplifting keys bringing a warm and soulful edge whilst shimmering juno notes add a floaty element to get lost in. next up we have if we can make it here, the title being something of an in-joke with the boys when they find themselves in the more remote or far-flung corners of the world performing their music to an appreciating crowd. the track is based around a simple yet beautiful 4-bar chord progression repeating throughout and shows svm in a playful and jazzy mood, managing to include soloing flute and marching snare drum rhythms without as much of a flinch!moons and flowers is up next, another sublime slice of hazy house music with a wonderful organic and live sound palette. echoing rhodes licks join dubby synth fx, adding waves of colour whilst the gentle vocal provides the icing on the space-cake. lastly we have the hatch, which winds things down somewhat for a lovely, somewhat stoned interlude track which is over all too soon. an impeccable demonstration of retro-inspired yet forward thinking house,listen to your heartsees session victim at the top of their game.

it’s hard to imagine being at the cutting edge of electronic dance music for over three decades, and never resorting to cliché or tired gimmicks in order to create unique and forward thinking music, but matthew herbert is still channelling original and thought provoking ideas into his projects all these years later. via his accidental record label, he has always excelled at left of centre productions, and through a variety of genre aliases (including doctor rockit, wishmountain and the matthew herbert big band), his imagination has always run wild, resulting in an infectious catalogue of music over the years. “brand new love-, featuring the vocals of rising star, zilla, finds herbert creating a dense and dramatic bass heavy cut. a steppers beat, utilizing herbert’s trademark sampling techniques, it’s a killer cut with sweeping cinematic qualities that sounds head and shoulders ahead of the rest. special request, the jungle heavy arm of paul woolford’s many recording talents, is enlisted to put his breakbeat spin on the original, and turns in an absolutely lethal version, choppy breaks, spinbacks and booming subs come with intent, whilst a sumptuous string arrangement accompanies zilla’s vocal for a truly uplifting spirit. “the peacock-, with its loose beats and opaque stabs, rolls along with its industrial undertones and ravey motif, discordant at times but a truly hypnotizing but in the finest of side b1 traditions. bringing up the rear, “cheekbone” is frenetic and charging micro tribal rave (a new genre classification right there), a glorious medley of percussion, earworm synths and guillotined vocal samples, showing just why matthew herbert is as vital an artist now as he has ever been.

brainwaltzera debuts on film. the anonymous producer, whose work has has already received online approval from legendary british idm auteur aphex twin, offers up an extended ep for the berlin based imprint. in 2015 a soundcloud profile under the name user18081971 - now identified as belonging to richard d. james, commented on curious brainwaltzera upload quilat spring 1 outtake. the move prompted speculation as to who exactly is behind the music. exquisitely produced and executed in such fine fashion so as to decry pure imitation - there’s plenty to theorise here. regardless of their true creator - which will undoubtedly remain a secret for the time being, the compositions on film006 are of similarly high calibre. varied in approach and marrying both electronic & acoustic elements with ease, the six tracks that comprise the record range from yearning ambient segues and dreamy down tempo grooves to otherworldly krautrock and more direct, dance floor fare - but remain bound tight as a cohesive and functional body of work by a glorious, arcane musicality. whether weaving soft electronic tones in and amongst snappy breaks or detuned drum-machine strikes, the artist’s ear for acoustic harmony is perhaps the pervading theme across the six tracks that make up the aecoba ep, marking it out as an excellent addition to the film labels growing catalogue

for the labels ninth release, deep a & biris black crow records revisits one that helped establish the labels direction back in the imprints first year. bcr003, insular realms by fellow israeli producer hakimonu, was praised by many including resident advisor, who said the ep proved his off-kilter take on techno and house is as vibrant and inviting as ever. now in 2017, deepa & biri have invited mind against, luigi tozzi and echologist (aka dub techno veteran brendon moeller) to all rework the original version of insular realms for 2017. first up are life & death’s mind against, with one of the fognini brothers most direct techno productions yet, with a mid-track moment of calm before the intensity resumes. luigi tozzi, the rome-based producer who has had previous outings on dynamic reflection and dino sabatinis outis music, contributes the second remix. taking the lead from the originals more ethereal moments, his version is dreamy & almost wistful as it propels along its shaking rhythm. the b-side offers two takes from brendon moeller in his echologist guise, with a dub mix that twists the original into an acid-inflected track that slowly ratchets up the tension over its seven minutes, while the reshape breaks things down into a churning rhythm peppered with flashes f off kilter sonic details.

after starting out with eps showcasing tracks by various artists, invite’s choice is back with a 3 track ep by drafted.
the ep is opened by detached with it’s dominating, repeating tom/percussive low-end sound. the frequential spectrum is filled up by other percussive elements and reverb-filled effects, which give the track a spacious feel. oxidian starts out in your face with it’s droning and repetitive synth. the track evolves into an abstract apogee with intense synthesis before it breaks down again, allowing for a smooth mix to be made. sphere closes down this 3-track ep on the b-side and does so with lots of fast changing hi-hat and ride patterns and one sharp sounding synthesizer, which makes it a perfect b-side closing track. once again a great showcase of sustainable modern day electronic music by invite’s choice!

in early 1978, vincent ahehehinnou left the orchestre poly-rythmo de cotonou without explanation. he had been one of their principal vocalist since 1968 and had helped transform them from a hard-charging nightclubband into a musical powerhouse and africa-wide sensation. by the end of 1977, after an explosive performance at the pan-african arts and culture festival (festac77) in lagos, the band had reached the very pinnacle of their success.
for nearly forty years, the reasons behind vincent’s sudden departure have remained a mystery. until now. in an interview included with analog africa’s new reissue of best woman – vincent’s first post-poly-rythmo album, which has been out-of-print for close to four decades and nearly impossible to find outside west africa – the great singer finally breaks his silence. he didn’t leave … he was pushed.

deluxe, will sessions’ debut lp of original material, contains tracks previously available as limited press 7- records, freshly remastered for a full length album. the album contains guest appearances from detroit legends allan barnes (blackbyrds) and amp fiddler (parliament/funkadelic), as well as florida’s own king of funk rickey calloway, and relative new-comer coko (funk night records). the album is a collection of singles reminiscent of classic funk and soul with deep breaks, tight rhythm section, blazing horns, and raw vocal performances.

the canoe label comes to life with some rough and ready cuts for the wilder kind of dance, courtesy of nyra s gritty studio approach. having previously been found on the likes of never learnt, elastic dreams and more besides, there s no doubt the plucky producer has experience in the field, and the diversity of the styles on canoe 001 is testament to that. -d.a.t- is a stripped down machine workout that keeps things punchy and urgent throughout. -save lite- meanwhile is a wound-up, bleepy techno number with soul, and then -rexperiance- aims for the rave jugular with a stab-tastic lead and some crunchy breaks.

spatial cues is a series of split singles sounding out main(void)’s and kon janson’s shared musical space. operating out of berlin and london, the two artists join forces to showcase their mutual vision of techno music. cues001 starts off the series with two immersive yet driving tracks, both built upon breathing and soughing atmospheres that wrap themselves around clear-cut, straightforward rhythms. guided by bleepy accents, cues001 a takes you on a stormy 10 minute ride through subtly shifting layers of sound, revealing its hidden depths in two slowly climaxing breaks. steadily evolving towards its floating finale, cues001 b contrasts a mesmerising percussion pattern with a steaming machine sound that loses itself in endless feedback cascades.

cold water, bad weather and a car packed with machines. best conditions to make a record. after two weeks, the reflections are three tracks, in three different ways but with many connections. the ep starts with “glowe” and technoid breakbeats, which are being controlled by heavy chords. “wiek” stays with the pattern of breaks but gets more emotional through various pads, which appear and suddenly disappear. on the b-side “spycker” finds his path, with the help of several percussive elements.

the fourth release on bjarki and johnny chrome silver’s bbbbbb records, comes hot on the heels of the first. two and three are limited run, vinyl only, hand stamped releases to be sought out from your local dealer. bjarki returns as cucumb45 with the 5-track ep ‘something weirdcore’. on the surface there are elements of jungle, breakbeat, techno and rave, but to say this spans genres would be an understatement – it defies them. the title track instantly commands attention with breaks samples offset against indecipherable robotic groans and melancholic chords, but a sudden change of drum pattern shows this is more than a reprieve of known territory – it’s a voyage away from the limits of tempo and genre. this theme is explored throughout the ep by way of unnerving stripped back techno (akureyri), electro with subtle inflections of dancehall (comatack) and even a big beat/dub influenced jam (music for advertising). as cucumb45 plays with genres as we know them, so he does with the emotional resonance of the release. frequently switching from euphoric to anxious, each track is a testament to his incredible attention to detail. simply put, this is music for those who hate to be labelled.
